The Oldest Tennis Racket
The Oldest Tennis Racket by Jane Thurnell-Read
A tennis racket that was nearly 150 years old was sold at the UK auction house Christie's in November 2005. The racket frame is made of ash and the strings of animal gut. It sold for GB Pounds 19,200 (nearly US Dollars 36,000) to a private collector in spite of some of the strings being broken.
Another racket made in 1870 was sold for GB Pounds 16,800 (approx US dollars 31,000).
In total there were 123 lots in the auction - the collection of the late Major Normal Railing.
